Have you ever thought about the safety of the sunscreen we use to put on ourselves and our children? If you are unaware of the effects of the most commonly used sunscreens on the market, I will give you a little tid bit of information…
Many of the common ingredients found in sunscreens we use on a daily basis contain toxic chemicals that our skin absorbs. These chemicals have potentially harmful side effects. Two of the major side effects of these chemicals added are, hormone disruption and possible altering of the reproduction system. These chemicals also have been shown to affect thyroid functioning as well. When rubbed on our skin, these chemicals have been proven to absorb through skin tissue and into our bloodstream.
How do we know that?
In 2010, a study was done that tested samples of mothers’ breast milk. The study had shown that in over 85% of milk samples taken, at LEAST one chemical found in sunscreens had been found in each of them. That means, over 85% of fetuses and newborns are exposed to these toxic chemicals. These same chemicals that have the potential to alter reproduction and endocrine systems…
NICE…
(You can read more about these chemicals here.)
There are MANY toxic things we are constantly exposed to on a daily basis. Many we cannot control. However, there are many things we can take control of that can really make a huge difference in maintaining a healthy quality of life. If we have the capability of avoiding toxic ingredients such as the ones in sunscreen, why don’t we??
Here is an awesome alternative to the junk you may have stored away in your cabinet or beach bag. An alternative in which you can trust because it is made by Y-O-U!
What you’ll need…
– 2 tbsp of zinc oxide (UVA protectant)
– 1/2 oz of organic beeswax pellets
– 4 oz of organic coconut oil (SPF 7)
– 3 oz of distilled water
– 10 drops of Young Living Purification oil (insect repellent)
– 5 drops of YL Lavender oil (for added good smell and skin benefits)
– 5 drops of YL Frankincense oil (skin benefits)
– 5 drops of YL Carrot Seed oil (SPF 38-40)
– 2 Sulfurzyme tablets (optional)
(all of these oils, besides the carrot see oil, are contained in the Everyday Oils Collection that is included in the Premium Starter Kit)……If you want to find out how to purchase them, click (here).
Directions…
In a double boiler (or two pots stacked on top of each other with the bottom one containing boiling water), add the beeswax pellets and coconut oil. Stir and let sit until pellets are completely melted.
Pour melted oil and pellets in a bowl with 3 oz of distilled water and mix with hand mixer. Add zinc oxide and the powder of the Sulfurzyme tablets. Mix well.
Pour in stainless steel, glass, or ceramic bowl (so oils won’t eat away petrochemicals found in plastics). Mix in all oils until well incorporated and becomes a creamy consistency.
Add to a glass jar or stainless steal container! (I used a recycled baby food jar!)
There you have it!! Your non-toxic DIY sunscreen!

The sulferzyme tablets are optional, but what does it do if I include them?
I made it optional in case you didn’t have it. It’s added in to provide free radical protection ; ).
